Capricornia, a sailing whaleboat

Capricornia was bought by her current owner, Pieter Lunstedt, in Darwin 9 years ago. She was brought to Adelaide and after Pieter became enthused by the LBT in the 2005 Tawe Nunnugah, he trailered her to Hobart and convinced the LBT committtee that she would be a worthwhile project. Six months later she left the workshop and instantly proved her sailing
pedigree. She was completed 2 days before the RAID commenced, had a very satisfactory capsize test, and though equipped with 8 oars, sailed whenever there was a breeze. She is beamier than the Swiftsure and has buoyancy tanks built in fore and aft. Previously she was an open boat. While in Darwin she suffered from the ravages of the climate and was severely cracked and had many damaged ribs. These were removed, and oregon planks were inserted between her carvel backing battens, effectively

giving her a double thickness hull. The she was glassed and epoxied inside and out, giving her a modern composite sandwich construction over a traditional hull shape. This has given her at least  the same strength but with the advantage of  being easier to maintain and clean.

Capricornia will be available for hire as a sail trainer or expedition boat for two years by the LBT. She is a sailing classroom on water; able to comfortably accommodate 8 people yet she is easily sailed double handed. She has 8 rowing positions though is more effectively rowed by 4 people.

She is being used in the “On the Water” programme, training children from the Huon Valley cluster of schools boat skills in rowing and sailing.
