LBT expeditions
The Living Boat Trust, as part of its mission to promote the skills associated with safe and enjoyable boating, and also to celebrate the fantastic waterways and history which surround us, conducts regular expeditions.
Our main expeditions are the biannual Tawe Nunnugahs, the historic 10 day trips from Recherche Bay to Hobart to conincide with the bieginning of the Australian Wooden Boat Festival. Planning is well under way for yet another Tawe Nunnugah early in 2013.
Some of these are for schools and are extensive, well organised three and four day expeditions in our whale boats, Swiftsure and Capricornia. We have three expeditions coming up in October and November for Friends school and for Geeveston District High School as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
We also run regular shorter expeditions around parts of the Huon River usually around parts of Egg Island including the mysterious lagoons and the Egg island canal and celebrating literary thems such as Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons and the new Three Men in a Boat by author Jerome K. Jerome.
Upcoming events include:
Participation in the celebration of the Mawson expedition on Friday December 2. We are looking at including the OWP after hours program in this centennial celebration.
A birding circumnavigation of Egg Island, hosted by Don Knowler who contributes regularly to “The Mercury” newspaper. This will be offered soon once dates are confirmed. There will be 8 places only on the Capricornia. Egg Island is now an important reserve managed by the Tasmanian Land Conservancy.
Members only sailing/camping expedition to Randalls Bay 10 - 11th December 2011. STILL IN PLANNING - this is to be just like the ‘old days’ when members met their own expenses, travelled in company to Randalls Bay, stayed overnight and returned the next day. This is a good way to make sure ALL our precious boats get used. A list of boats has gone up on the kitchen door of the shed to ‘baggsie’ the boat of your choice. We haven’t had a response yet from the owners of our usual camp site so keep in touch to be sure of dates and venue. Only fully paid up members will be able to take part in this expedition.
Details to be announced shortly.
