LBT workshop photo albums - 2009
The workshop is a busy and convivial place on Monday evenings from 5 pm to 9 pm.
Volunteers are always welcome as are donations of money, tools or materials. This workshop activity is important as it maintains our fleet of heritage boats and has in the past and will again be the focus of some community boat building.
These photo albums can be accessed by double clicking on each thumbnail photo or the photos can be previewed by hovering the mouse over each thumbnail. This will take you a me.com site where my .mac account (now regrettably known as me.com) resides. I can put a lot of photos there very cheaply in comparison to loading them onto the lbt.org.au site.
LBT workshop August 2009
The cold and wet have kept the workshop numbers down over the last few weeks, and some keen volunteers have been working during the day during a lull in the OWP, giving much needed attention to the Grebes and Huon Explorer, Huon Harmony and Lightwood Bottom have been repainted, antifouled and had much needed maintenance and minor repairs carried out. The Lady Jane renovation is progressing well and Matilda has her engine mounts in and the motor aligned with the propeller shaft, work that has taken much thought, discussion and time.
In addition, thanks to the generosity of Pettit Transport of Huonville and Duggans Quarries at Cradoc, we have been able to gravel the wet and boggy area in front of the workshop, to the delight of the OWP participants in particular. Pettits in particular have been staunch supporters over the years and have contributed a great deal to the development of the LBT.
We now need to progress the verandah and an electrical upgrade, outside security lights and three phase power. Any interested parties, interested in giving advice, quotes or donating materials or time, please contact me.
This gorgeous little Huon Pine clinker dinghy has been sitting in the weather for many years, the last couple on the banks of the Huon just outside the workshop. She was in need of some TLC and her restoration is now under way. Volunteers on Monday nights are busy replacing planks, splining cracks, sanding and scraping, under the guidance of John Young.
She will be for sale when complete and the funds will help provide much needed equipment for the workshop.
The Lady Jane, May - June 2009
LBT workshop May 2009
Much has happened this month. The Lady Jane progresses and her plank is about to be replaced and the cray boat finally has her engine bearers in place, now much chunkier and with very substantial bolts.
The great news is that the Flying Fifteen, the Kontiki, is again in the water, being launched Wednesday May 13. This boat which was built in 1953 and which has been out of the water for about 15 years has had a significant renovation. she will shortly be rigged and hopefully sailed in the near future. Photos will follow shortly.
LBT workshop April 2009
The Rowan is back in the water now and has been antifouled, faired and a sheerstrake repaired, not to mention the transom repair, new floor and a lovely rope fender for its new role as patrol boat for the OWP. A little dinghy has also been brought in for assessment. She and the crayboat will be sold to pay for improvements to the workshop and the fleet.
Space was hired out for Noel Azar to prepare his boat for travel to Queensland and volunteers learned and helped in this process
LBT workshop November 2008
All other work in the workshop has now been put on hold in an endeavour to ensure that the Capricornia will be finished in time for the Tawe Nunnugah RAID commencing in early February
The LBT workshop strives to supply, repair and maintain boats in the LBT fleet. This month the Capricornia had a deadline to meet in order to participate in the Tawe Nunnugah from Recherche Bay to Hobart
LBT workshop March 2009
LBT workshop January 2009
This month, Swiftsure oars are trimmed and repaired, progress continues on the Kontiki and the Cray Boat and the Rowan receives some much needed attention
LBT workshop August 24 2009
Quite a turnout with 14 attending and a busy productive evening it was. No cook tonight and as it turned out all the takeaways were closed so it was off to the supermarket for a knock up pasta meal, this time conjured up by Chris Wilson.
Lots of work on the Kon tiki, splining and plugging.
Lady Jane also had a lot of attention, especially her floor and her thwart and it was indeed a case of many hands make light work. The cray boat Matilda also progressed with engine floors and shaft alignment.
LBT workshop October 2009
Lots going on at the moment. Much maintenance of oars, rigs and boats. Oars have been adjusted, repaired, sanded, painted re-leathered and varnished. The Rowan has had an extra thwart installed and 4 rowlocks installed to give a 6 oar boat. The Swiftsure centreboard has been faired and the centrecase is about to be put together.
The Flying Fifteen Kontiki is having a new rig installed, we found a longer mast in the depths of the shed. The sails have been hoisted and very soon she will be launched. Even more stunning is the imminent launch of the cray boat the Matilda. We will put her in the water so any movement in the hull will moves before the final engine installation, not after.
She has not been in the water for so long that nobody can remember the last time exactly.
Any factual information on these boats would be gratefully received.
A lot of work over the last month on oar repair and maintenance in preparation for the Swiftsure Regatta on 7 November 2009. We have secured some of the materials for the verandah project and intend to have building permits shortly. The cray boat wil hopefully go into the water next week, and the Kontiki is having her rig adjusted and coamings etc varnished and trimmed.
The Swiftsure has had a centrecase made and a rudder is under construction. Once the OWP comletes this week she will have the centrecase fitted. She is also having a new aor made after tow were broken in the Regatta
