On the Water programme photos

A $100,000 grant announced at the Swiftsure Regatta in November last year by Franklin Labour MHR Julie Collins is now in full operation. The training of nearly 300 kids from the Huon Valley started this week amid blustery conditions. Six instructors from the LBT and the   project co-ordinator Andrew Dobson, using the LBT fleet of dinghies and whaleboats, began taking this first group of 22 students through a course that will enable them to gain the Basic Skills 1 qualification offered by Yachting Australia. In addition to enabling these children to be confident, competent and safe on the water and more able to exercise on our wonderful waterways, they will be able to gain a certificate that will enable and encourage them to gain further skills and experience on the water.

These photo albums can be accessed by double clicking on each thumbnail photo or the photos can be previewed by hovering the mouse over each thumbnail. This will take you a me.com site where my .mac account (now regrettably known as me.com) resides. I can put a lot of photos there very cheaply in comparison to loading them onto the lbt.org.au site.

Photo albums of the On the Water Programme

Huon Primary School March - March 2009

Grade 6 were the first group to take on the On the Water programme. Brisk winds provided excitement for the first two days, and all went beyond our expectations. The weather was a great asset as it reinforced our message about being safe on the water, these students could begin to appreciate how unsafe  it can be on the water

Capsize Drill

Every student undertaking this programme will complete a capsize drill. It involves learning to right the boat, how to position it, how to get the water out and people back in and then to sail it back to shore. It is the most talked about and the probably the most enjoyed part of the course

Glen Huon Primary School April 2009

Students from Grade 4 and 5 were very enthusiastic learners and despite their smaller size, did very well in all aspects of the course. We were blessed with some stunning and still days for this group.

Franklin Primary School May 2009

Grade 5 & 6 students encountered cold and rainy weather, though we were fairly sheltered from the winds at Franklin. On the last day the Swiftsure was used with two students to an oar and they found a log that floated high and towed it back to shore to se if it was treasure - possibly Huon Pine?

Geeveston District High School August 2009

Fantastic weather for this crew who the day before rowed to the northern end of Egg Island and went ashore to visit the football oval that was once there. Today they took the Swiftsure out with two students to a smaller Capricornia oar. The local swans showed much interest in the event.

Cygnet Primary School October 2009

This group had a day cancelled becuse of  rain, but did particularly well on this fine day with fickle winds.  As usual students were keen on rowing as well as sailing and whenever the wind dropped the oars would come out. The Rowan crew caught a lovely brown trout while escorting the fleet.
