Boats of the LBT

First would have to be Swiftsure,
built in 1993 and the first major undertaking of the LBT. We are grateful to the Tasmanian Community Fund for providing the grant that enabled her construction. She has been involved in many LBT activities, including the Swiftsure Regattas, sailing and camping adventures, the Tawe Nunnugah expeditions, has starred as a prop in the feature film Van Diemens Land and is a fantastic flagship for the LBT.

The Capricornia is our second whaleboat, though a completely different boat to the Swiftsure. She has a centreboard and much wider beam and 300 kgs of lead ballast beneath
the sole and is designed to sail rather than be rowed. Her first voyage on the Tawe Nunnugah in January saw her win a pennant at the Southport Regatta.

She is under contract to the LBT after our volunteer workshop crew completed her renovation under the watchful eye of owner Pieter Lundstedt. This work was finished just in time for the RAID, and some more work was done after the event. She is now a sail trainer for the On the Water programme and is a beautiful boat to sail.

The Grebe dinghies are the core of our fleet. They are based on the Ian Oughtred Tammie Norrie design. They have all been beautifully built by various alliances with many of the schools of the Huon and the LBT and all have their own individual character.

The Gretchen is a 20 foot Atkins day sailer that has unusual charm and a shallow draft thanks to her distinctive leeboards. She will be available for hire to members as a day sailer to explore the Huon estuary and comes with outboard, which hopefully will be replaced by an electric motor in the near future.

The Rowan is our work boat and is used as the rescue boat for the OWP. Donated to the LBT some time ago she has been renovated by the workshop crew and relaunched in April 2009. She is a very effective rescue boat and we are looking at her supplying her with and electric motor as well.

The Huon Rat is a smaller Ian Oughtred design and is available to row or sail.

The Kontiki is an Uffa fox designed Flying Fifteen, a 20’ pocket racing keelboat. She is probably the oldest carvel built Flying Fifteen in the southern hemisphere and has just been relaunched and sailed after decades out of the water.

All of these boats are available for hire.
